I made it back to China without any incident. The city is even more quiet than when I left it, which was about two weeks into the outbreak. The businesses are suffering, which means the economy is suffering. And my friends, who are mostly business owners like myself. I worry about the future of my company and all of my friends, who are losing a lot of money every day.
In a city of more than 15 million, I've literally only seen about 20 people on the streets in the space of 3 hours. It's chilling. It's like a scene out of a movie. However, I'm glad the Chinese government is working so hard to contain the outbreak and many more people have recovered from the virus than have died. For all the mistakes they made during SARS, they've learned their lessons.
Let's remember that this could happen anywhere. H1N1 started in North America. No one bashed America or Americans for their mistakes. I hope people remember that this is a HUMAN crisis. Chinese are human beings. I love this country and its people. It is now my home and has been for over six years. I've been welcomed into the country. I've blossomed in this country. And a lot of it is because of the people.
All this said, I hope we are able to reschedule our trip to Seoul soon. We will keep you updated, but until things are contained and stable, we are being responsible and abiding by government requirements. We hope to see you soon, Seoul!
